campbell joins us from washington with the issues that still remain unresolved good afternoon, kyla. >> reporter: david, i just got off the phone with senate officials and they say there's no word yet on a possible vote today. with the hours ticking away, president obama came out to say a deal is in sight but it's not yet complete. vice president joe biden took over negotiations with mitch mcconnell yesterday after talks stalled between senate leaders. now, mcconnell said just minutes ago he wants to move forward on the tax offer and the latest democratic offer is to raise taxes on households making more than $450,000 a year. but there's still disagreements about spending cuts. >> that has been a good faith negotiation. we all want to protect tax payers. and can get it done now. >> we have to do this in a balanced and responsible way and if we're gonna be serious about deficit and debt reduction, there will have to have be some sacrifices. >> reporter: -- there have have to be some sacrifices. >> reporter: again, no votes have been scheduled at this point. kyla campbell, ktvu channe

. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, december 31st, new year's eve. in overnight news, san francisco firefighters had their work cut out for them when a natural gas line burst outside an apartment that was on fire. flames shot in the air on athens around 1:00 this morning. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live from the scene with video you will only see on channel 2. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning. the fire inside of that home is what triggered a second fire that came from the curbside gas valve right outside the home. that's why you see pg&e crews still doing last-minute repair work to patch up the road where they had to dig things up to access that line. that second fire coming from the gas line certainly made things difficult for firefighters this morning, as the fire ripped through both floors of the home, and flames from the natural gas line shot 15 feet in the air. the homeowners had to wait for the pg&e to turn off the gas line. this started around 1:00 on the 100 block of athens street. there were four people inside the home at the time of the fire. two of them were sent t

in washington, d.c.. as ktvu kay lam campbell reporting from our washington, d.c. newsroom americans are not optimistic. >> reporter: december is usually a time when most of us feel pretty good about the economy thanks to the holiday shopping season. but that was not the case this month. consumer confidence took a nose dive and economists blame the fear of falling over the fiscal cliff. the consumer confidence index hit a four year high in october but saw the largest drop since last summer when the country's credit rating was lowered. it's a sign of what is to come if no fiscal cliff deal is reached and automatic income tax increases and government spending cuts go into effect in four days. meanwhile the president called a top four congressional leaders to meet with them at the white house later today with the hopes they can avoid this potential crisis. and in a somewhat surprising move top republican signaled he might be willing to compromise more on that when i see you next. >>> only on 2 in the north bay search teams are using a new technology to try to find a man who jumped the c

clark is off today. >> yes, he is. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. tori campbell is also off. it's monday, december 24th. >>> we're following developing news out of marin county this morning where search-and-rescue teams are about to search for a missing man. alex savidge has more on how a traffic stop turned into a much larger situation. alex? >> reporter: well, now that the sun is coming up, the team is going to resume searching for this team, somewhere in the cordova creek. the man is suspected of drunk driving and ran from officers during a traffic stop. it happened earlier in the morning. he jumped into the creek in an area where the water is moving very quickly. authorities put a boat in the water right away to search the bas ofthe creek but there was no sign of the man. this all began after midnight when ross police made a dui stop on the man's car near sir francis drake and college. but during the field sobriety test, this man took off running from officers. officers watched him go in the creek and eventually lost sight of him. >> they followed for about 100 yards trying to encour
